General Rules and Regulations

In order to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for reading, learning and other library activities, the Library require all members to comply with the following General Rules and Regulations.

Members and visitors who do not follow the Library rules may be asked to leave and may lose their library privileges. Members who violate these rules may also be subject to arrest or other legal actions.

Prohibited Conducts

Visitors may not engage in conduct that disrupts or interferes with the normal operation of the Library, is staff, volunteers or its use by other members including but not limited to:

  1. Harassing or threatening behavior.
  2. Using abusive language or gestures.
  3. Making unreasonable noise, including loud talk on cell phone or otherwise.
  4. Engaging in sexual conduct or behavior.
  5. Possessing a knife, or any other weapon.
  6. Eating, drinking, smoking, chewing chat or any other illegal drug.
  7. Making unreasonable use of drinking water or sleeping in the library, or misusing the library toilets.
  8. Damaging or misusing the library furniture, books, computer, or any other property,
  9. Engaging in any activity that is in violation of Ethiopian national, regional or Zone or Kebele regulations and laws.

Additional Rules

  1. The Library is not responsible for personal items that are lost, stolen or damaged on library property.
  2. The Library staff or security guards have the right to inspect bags or other personal property when members enter or leave the library.
  3. Some items in the library cannot be copied because of copyright laws.
  4. Library staff may ask members to show their Library card at any time.
  5. Photography and recording are not allowed at Library premises without permission. No pictures or videos can be posted on social media.
  6. Visitors with disabilities may ask Library staff or volunteers for reasonable accommodations.
  7. Unattended children are permitted to use the library but parents are responsible to accompany them or leave them with a responsible caretaker.

Borrowing Rules

Members with valid library borrowing account agree to the following.

  1. Members must be 14 years or older and must have legal ID to borrow books.
  2. Borrowers account is not transferrable.
  3. Borrowers agree to comply to library rules, including keeping track of due dates and ensuring Library has the current contact information.
  4. Borrowers can have up to 5 items on loan excluding textbooks and guides.
  5. Textbooks, guides and special reference books are not permitted for borrowing.
  6. Books must be returned with in 4 weeks.
  7. You may renew books if another member does not request items.
  8. When any item becomes overdue, borrowing privileges are automatically suspended with no refund of membership fee.
  9. For items not returned for more than 30 days, overdue bill for its replacement will be issued at the current cost of the book, plus a 200 Birr processing fee.
